THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY

When should I stop eating or drinking?

Do not eat or drink from midnight onward the night before the operation unless you need water to take your regular medications. Take these medications with as few sips of water as you can.

What will happen once I get to the hospital?

All patients please check in at the hospital admitting desk on the day of your surgery (1st Floor St. vincent's). Day Care patients will be going to the operating room from the Day Care/Same Day Surgery area. The nurses there will prepare you for surgery.

The doctor will meet you just before your surgery. You will need to mark the leg to be operated on with a felt pen before the operation.

The anesthetist will also visit and check you one last time.

Your surgeon will have decided whether you will be sent home after your surgery or admitted to hospital based on the information provided in your pre-assessment.

What should I bring to the hospital?

If your surgeon has given you a prescription for a foam Walker Boot please remember to bring the boot with you to the hospital on the day of your surgery.

Please remember to bring any medications that you are currently taking. Arrange to have crutches or a walker at your home. Bring your MSP Care Card.
