What
is the difference between Day Care Surgery and Admission Surgery?
Patients
undergoing Day Care Surgery are released from the hospital
the same day they have surgery. Patients requiring overnight
stay undergo "Admission Surgery." All Admission
Surgery patients MUST attend a "Pre-Admission Clinic
Appointment." This Appointment takes place approximately
1 month prior to the surgical date. Day Care patients do not
need to attend a "Pre-Admission Clinic."

Prior
to surgery, all Admission Surgery patients (those
staying in hospital overnight after surgery) must
make an appointment to be seen at the Pre-Admission
Clinic at Foot & Ankle Clinic, at St. Paul's.
The appointment can be made through your surgeon's
office. The Pre-Admission Clinic is located on the
third floor at St. Paul's Hospital. All patients
requiring overnight, in hospital stays MUST attend
a Pre-Admission Clinic appointment (not Day Care
Patients). (Virtual Operating

What
should I bring to my Pre-Admission Clinic Appointment?
You will meet the
pre-surgery nurse, and you may meet the occupational therapist,
physiotherapist, anaesthetist and other health professionals.
You may need further x-rays and tests such as blood tests
and an ECG depending upon your general health. Bring
with you a copy of any recent blood work, consultations, ECG's
and blood pressure measurements you have from
your family doctor's office. It may prevent repeating tests.
It is also helpful to bring your
medications so that the nurse can record them,
or write out all of your medications and doses and allergies
on a piece of paper to give to the nurse in the clinic. Also,
remember to bring your MSP Care
Card.
